6 Reasons to Give Gifts Anonymously

anonymous gift tagThere are a number of reasons I like to give gifts anonymously (as I mentioned back in this post). And, there are a number of benefits to doing so.

1.  The biggest reason may be that they can not pay you back.   Obviously, they can’t since they don’t know who you are. 😉  If they really can’t afford to pay you back, you can avoid a potentially uncomfortable situation.  They don’t feel pressure to get you something.  If they are able to pay you back, then they may pay it forward instead. And, thus bless someone else.

2.  Giving anonymously is a higher form of giving.  You are definitely not asking, expecting, or even getting anything in return.  It’s now really an unconditional gift.

3.  Giving anonymously also stems from a purer motivation. There’s no “hidden agenda.” You are not looking to be recognized or to get something in return.  That should never be the motivation anyways.  But now, there definitely won’t be any recognition.

4.  An anonymous gift is also harder for the recipient to refuse. It can prevent people from letting their pride get in the way of accepting the gift.  It’s also a surprise which often makes it more of a blessing.

5.  Giving anonymously also maintains your privacy.  This is beneficial whether the gift is large or small.  You can thus give a larger gift than you might have given if people were watching.  You won’t feel awkward being recognized, no one will start expecting it from you, or even start asking regularly.  And, if it’s small — no worry about being embarrassed.

6.  Lastly, a small benefit to giving anonymously — it’s like knowing or having a secret.  It’s a nice feeling knowing that you’ve helped someone without getting any gift or recognition in return.

If you are interested and need ideas, there are a number of ways to give anonymously and even giving money anonymously.  I’m sure you can also come up with your own 😉

If you have already given someone an anonymous gift, please share about it in the comments below (without giving away specific details of course!).

I sent an anonymous letter and $500 to my pastor’s wife after she went out of her way to support me. She is the most amazing woman I have ever met! She deserves so much more!!

One of my colleagues is just such an incredible person. but he’s one of those people who feel they must reciprocate gits. I wanted to show him love without pressuring him to “get me something”. It was nothing too exciting, just a travel mug with a joke related to his field. His old “fun” travel mug was damaged in the dishwasher, and I wanted to bring some fun back to his day to day. He has no idea it was from me. Especially since I already gave him a homemade scarf (him and a few other people with whom I am closest)

Thanks for sharing! That’s the idea…good feeling isn’t it? I like the “gave him something from you” to help throw him off. 🙂
