God Will Never Leave you

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  Hebrews 13:5

This is actually the tail end of the scripture. The whole passage is

“Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'”

However, it’s the last part I’m thinking about now. It’s a reference to Deuteronomy 31:6. God promises to ALWAYS be with us. He doesn’t say that nothing bad will happen. Regardless of your circumstances, even in times of trouble, hardship, uncertainty, God is right there with you. Isaiah 43:1-2 has a similar idea, but that’s for another time…

A Box of Leaves

“I will never leave you” is the basis of one of the items we send to encourage people. Sometimes with a different picture on the card. But always the same scripture. We send a card and a pile of leaves. Really. The inspiration for this item came a couple of years ago when I was doing a mundane and oh so pleasant task (sarcasm) — raking a multitude of leaves.  Happily, the final leaves have fallen and that task is done for this year.

During that autumn day while I was raking maple leaves, I was thinking of friends of mine, a married couple, as he was having health problems.  And, for some reason I was thinking of that scripture. I don’t remember why, maybe it was in a devotional that morning. But, I looked down at my feet with all the leaves and felt God telling me “send them a pile of leaves”.  No, not an audible voice.  But, a clear impression.  And, I remember thinking “you’ve got to be kidding me God… Really?”

But, I did send them.  Consequently, a new gift was created. It’s a nice word play, a pun, something to bring a smile. More importantly, it’s a reminder of God’s faithfulness. The card has that scripture and the text inside includes “God will never leave you” and “you are unbeliefably special” (an intentional spelling error). Beneath it, in the box is – a pile of leaves…artificial ones. (This is easier than preserving real ones. Can you imagine just sending real ones as is?)

Afterwards, I heard from the couple that received the first of these unique surprises in the mail. It did bring a smile…

Most importantly, another reason to smile – God will never leave you.
