Laughter is a gift from God

Today’s post is about laughter, and Christmas…. First, here are some scriptures about laughter – ’cause laughter is a gift from God.

Prov 15:13 A joyful heart brightens one’s face, but a troubled heart breaks the spirit.

Prov 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine,

Ps 126:2-3 Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

It’s not saying we’re always laughing. There’s a time to share a friend’s sorrow.  But we do have reasons for joy, and it should show sometimes at least.  Medical science has found many, many benefits to laughter.  There are scriptures and things in nature that show God has a sense of humor and we’re made in his image. Laughter and joy aren’t the same, but laughter is the sound of joy, the byproduct of joy.  Below is an example of some laughter…

That little 6yr old boy certainly had some laughter and joy.  Laughing so hard there’s no sound coming out.  At a cartoon, just a cartoon.  Sometimes I think we adults don’t see the simple things to laugh at, we don’t laugh as easily as children do.  We get serious, uptight, stressed.  Or worried we’ll look silly.  We don’t laugh as much as we could or medical science says we should . . .

That movie has funny parts, but it’s a classic holiday, nice story about mean Mr. Grinch finding the “real meaning of Christmas”, well the world’s “nice” meaning. The Grinch got closer, he at least figured out it’s not about stuff from the store… But maybe there’s more there. If you remember, at the end, the Grinch’s heart grows 3 sizes in one day. Maybe that’s what happens to us, when we realize what God has given us. . . (see the story in Luke).

But, that little boy now is a 30yr old pain .. in .. the .. butt.  Well, sometimes.  But, so is his dad.  And God loves both of us.  You probably know this, but God knows everything you and I have ever done, said, and even thought.  He knows things you haven’t done and said that you should have.  And still, despite all that, HE LOVES YOU.  That’s another reason for joy.  Maybe when we realize that, our “heart” grows 3 sizes to hold the love and joy.  Joy that should come out somewhere.  It should show on your face, at least sometimes.  Joy, that changes your life.

So I hope you can find a reason to laugh every day.  And a reason for joy.  More than one reason. Because laughter is a gift from God. And, Christmas is an even better gift.
