Rather than a list of x ways to make someone’s day, I’m going to tell you some stories. Some you may have already heard. They’ve been told in some forum or format already, but more people need to hear them.
I’m not going to use any names. The point isn’t to publicly congratulate them or give them 15min of fame. . . They probably wouldn’t want to be praised like that anyways. They just did what they could, did what they knew was right, or did what would help someone else.
Hopefully these will inspire you, help you realize the world hasn’t totally “gone to pot”. There are still good people out there. Maybe it’ll motivate you to do something similar for someone else.
The first is something small and simple. But to the person who was having a bad day because of one rude and/or selfish person after another.. . It was just someone being polite on the road, doing something they didn’t have to do. There was a long line of cars going one direction at a traffic light, and people coming the other way trying to turn left. One kind soul when they saw traffic stopped ahead of them did not move forward keeping as close to the person in front of them as possible. They held back and let cars from the other lane turn left in front of them. Car after car, seven or eight of them in fact. To someone in that group – that just made their day.
Just a month ago there was a blanket drive at a church nearby. Probably a lot of similar drives at a lot of similar churches. The organizer of this one had done it for several years. But they were tired, stressed, and didn’t want to bother. Yet they were convinced to do it one more time. . . and the blankets came pouring in. From other churches, work places, public places. It just made their day. And when they gave out the blankets to people – that made their day too.
More recently, many in the North East got 30” snow. Maybe you experienced that or heard about it. . . 😉 There are a number of stories of people just “doing their job” – working long hours and getting roads cleared. But they made someone’s day. And a few stories I know of where someone helped others with their snowblower or shovel. They helped out the new dad trying to shovel all of that white crap out of his driveway. The dad with a baby and not even any teenagers around to help shovel. . . Or the people that took they snowblower down the street to someone who didn’t have one, someone going stir crazy cause they couldn’t get out of the house because of all the snow to shovel. . .
Or how about the person who paid $10 for someone in the other line at the grocery, that didn’t have enough to pay their bill.
Or the person who found out they were the right blood type and perfect match for someone who needed a kidney. And agreed to have the operation to donate a kidney – to someone they had just met. . .
These things still happen.
And if we each try just a little, they can keep happening.
Don’t miss a chance to make someone’s day. Don’t just keep quiet, or rush by, or think “what’s in it for me?”
Make a difference. You’ll be glad you did.
